Clavinet history

- [Narrator] The clavinet was manufactured from 1964 until around 1982 by Hohner, a German company perhaps most well-known for harmonicas. Hohner also had a long history producing many other kinds of instruments, including accordions, melodicas, banjos and ukuleles. In addition, they invented many types of electric keyboards, most of which are pretty unknown today. These include the cembalet, pianet, bassett, and the guitaret. But of course now, they're most well-known for their invention of the clavinet. The clavinet has some pretty deep roots. It's family tree actually dates back to the early 14th century to a distant relative bearing resemblance to the clavinet, which is the clavichord. A clavichord was similar to a harpsichord, but different in that it used a metal blade to strike a string as opposed to the harpsichord which plucks the string when a key is played.
