- You've got your raw vocal performances in the can and now it's time to assemble the perfect final take. This leads us to comping. What is comping and why do we do it? The word comping is either referring to making a composite or the act of compiling. But regardless of the etymology of the word, comping is basically taking multiple takes and culling the best things from each of those takes into the comp track. Why do we do comping? We do comping because most singers cannot come in and sing a song through once and then it's perfect. Most people they're going to do many takes and each of those takes have things that are great about it but not one take has everything that's great about it. So we comp it. Comping's the unsung hero of editing. Most people hate it. Some other people find it boring. Your friends who are not in the music business might call you crazy because you're listening to the same thing 15 times in a row and hearing subtle differences. And they think it's the same…
