- [Instructor] One of the biggest challenges when composing film music is scoring to a moving picture. I mean, you might compose the perfect theme but then when you want to use that, you'll find that the visuals are just a little too long or a little too short. And this is a problem that's really unique to film scoring but it's a significant challenge. Well, there are a couple of tricks that filmmakers use consistently in film scoring to help your melodies be a little bit more flexible. The first is by creating a melody that uses pickup notes. Let's go back to the score for Raiders of the Lost Ark. This is the main theme, like the normal canonical version of the theme. (piano music playing) Notice these little pick up notes. To the untrained eye or you know, ear, I guess, these might just seem like a nondescript part of a melody, but in a film score these pickup notes buy you some flexibility.
