Compression glossary
- [Instructor] Along with EQ, compression and limiting in mixing are the backbone of the processing you'll do to the tracks that you receive to mix. So I want to spend some time talking about the glossary of terms used when describing compression. Again this is as much for the people making comments as it is for the engineers executing those comments. So what does it mean when you want to have something have more attack? What does it mean if a comment comes back to you that says it's breathing too much. What can you do besides EQ to give a little bit more pick to the bass guitar? How do you get more sustain out of an instrument? What does it mean when you want the snare to ring more? And how do you accomplish making something smoother or louder? Well except for the louder part, which can be easily achieved with a fader move, most of those other descriptors apply to compression techniques that you can use for your instruments and your vocals in a mix.
