- [Instructor] A mistake that I made a lot early on in my writing career was editing way, way, way too much while I was writing the song. Look, I understand, you know, you want to make this thing perfect as you go, but in my experience, it is much, much more effective to preserve the creative flow of the writing session during the initial parts of writing a song. It is much more important, I think, to get the overall shape of the song fleshed out before you start to really, really tweak and dig in to the actual details. Here's the problem. By sacrificing the flow of the session by bogging down on a particular line or even a particular word, and believe me, I did this plenty, what you end up doing is losing momentum. And momentum in a writing session is key. So when in doubt, edit less. I always describe it as putting in a line in the song that's good enough for now so that you can keep moving forward.
