Bass in higher registers

Bass in higher registers

- [Instructor] Whenever I'm tracking a band I keep an eye out for this one thing. Is there a section where the drummer goes into a heavy floor tom part and it masks the bassline? It happens more than you think and later, while mixing, you might find it difficult to get the bass to sit well in the mix. Here's an example. Listen to the third and fourth bars where the floor toms come in. (light-hearted music) So in that section the floor tom comes in and the bass is still audible but it could be better. Check this out. (light-hearted music) So all I did was ask the bassist to move the line up one octave. I usually figure out which string that would work well on. It might be just further up the same string or move it up to another string higher. It's a simple request but it can make the bassline sit so much easier in the mix. It can help propel the song and it usually makes the musician quite happy to know that the producer or engineer is actually keeping an eye out for them.
