Creating background vocal concept, parts, and sounds

- Background vocals, or BGVs as they're sometimes called, can take your production to the next level. So what can they add? I look at it like they might be able to add bigness, newness, dynamics, excitement. They do all of these things and a whole lot more. Keep in mind though, it's not a given to do background vocals. Sometimes a song can be much better if it's an intimate vocal performance without background vocals getting in the way. The other thing is as you begin to add vocal arrangements, the song can become more produced, and that might not be the right thing that you're going for in the song. So similar to all the other parts of the process, it's really great to have a vision for your background vocals. That means what do you want to do? Think about it a little bit before hand. So a few things to consider. The sound of the background vocals. Is it going to be the same singer or a different singer than the person who sang the lead? Are you going to use the same microphone?
