- [Larry] My pal Manny Nieto has recorded bands like The Breeders, Health, and many others. One day he sent me a cryptic email with a demo of this cool technique regating snare drum with a compressor. Simply put, you duplicate the snare track and then you plug ends on it and your digital audio workstation. Or, you can molt the snare on an analog console. Then you flip the polarity of the new snare track, so that when played together, the snare track nulls, or cancels out because of the phase inversion. Then you apply a compressor on that polarity reverse track and compress it really hard, so that every snare hit is brought quite far down in volume. Then you play it against the existing track, and when the levels are adjusted correctly, plus the ratio at attack and release, the snare will pop through like a magic gate has been used, and all the bleed in to the snare mic like kick, high hat, and more, will disappear.
