- [Instructor] It's beyond the scope of this course to teach music theory, but I feel like a big part of the sound in "The Assurance" was the fact that we used a slightly unusual scale, which is actually really common in film scoring. So, I wanted to take a brief look at that here. In pop music, we're used to hearing major scales (keyboard scale music) and minor scales. (keyboard scale music) But in film scoring, we often need to have more nuance when creating emotion, so it's common to use what are called church modes. These are scales that are built on other notes of the scale, which sounds weird, but hang with me here for a second if you've never heard of this. So, if we play all of the white keys starting on C, that's the C major scale.
