Damping drum ambience or not?

- [Instructor] The amount of ambience on a drum kit isn't just determined by placing mics further away from the kit, but we usually call it room mics. Overhead mics always pick up some of the room sound, and not just cymbals or drums. For this example, I recorded the drum set with the room wide open around it, and then with some acoustic-dampening panels, actually old office dividers, brought in close to the kit. Let's listen to the difference this makes. Soloing the small diaphragm mic pair over the kit, let's listen for the room tone on this opening film. This is with the room not damped wide open. (drum playing) And this is with the room damped. (drums playing) Once again, not damped. (drums playing) And damped. (drums playing) Now, keep in mind, these are the mics that are up above the kit, so the panels that are around the drum kit are actually below the mics, but you can hear the difference in the room ambience on these.
