Damping snare by hand during tracking

- [Instructor] This trick is one I've used only a few times over the years but it works so well. Say you've got a part of a song where the drummer is playing mostly toms or even just kick but not playing the snare. If you listen to that section, you usually hear the snare rattling away. So, what I do is I put somebody in the room next to the drummer or even on the floor facing up on their back and I have them damp the snare physically from the bottom, in this case, I'm using a piece of foam. So here's the photo. You can see my hand underneath, and then raise the foam up and damp the snare so at the point that the snare has to open up where it goes from the tom part to the snare part then we would just actually release the foam and the snare will start rattling out as needed and we'll have the perfect crank.
