Destroying hum

Larry: So I want to talk about destroying hum in the recording studio. When I first started recoding bands, one of the problems I had was people's amps buzzing and making all kinds of goofy sounds. Stuff that I didn't want to have in the mix. There's a lot of ways to solve these problems, and I'm going to show you some of them right now. One of the first main problems you'll encounter are ground loops. Now ground loops can happen when you have two devices that are both powered from the same source. We have, a DI box, and an amplifier here. Bass amp. They're both plugged into this power strip, and they're sharing grounds. They're both grounded devices. Now that's fine. There's no problem there. But a problem occurs when you have an instrument cable that's coming through the direct output of the DI box over to the input of the amplifier. Now there's another ground, there's the audio ground that these two are sharing. That can be a problem, it sounds like this (NOISE). You have switches…
