Different overhead drum mics

- [Instructor] Occasionally, I put up two pairs of different stereo mics as drum overheads to capture cymbals and the sound of the kit. I've never had the chance to audition them but I've never put up three sets of stereo mics in the same stand at the same time until now. I placed a small diaphragm condenser pair, a large diaphragm condenser pair, and two ribbon mics in the stereo. Now, let's listen. Listen for room, width, and ambience, cymbal articulation and fidelity, hi-hats and ride too, the amount of kick drum that you hear, and the amount of snare or toms. I'm going to go through a quick little run-through and you'll hear the differences overall. Here's the small diaphragm condenser mics. (mellow drumming) Here's the large diaphragm condenser mics. (mellow drumming) And here's the ribbon mics. (mellow drumming) They all have their differences, so now let's listen for room ambiance and the width of the stereo that we're picking up and the room ambience. So I'm going to click…
