Distortion as EQ brightening

- [Voiceover] Sometimes when you wish to brighten a track in the mix or just give it more presence, distortion can have a better effect than adding brightness with simple EQ. Decapitator by Soundtoys is a popular distortion plug-in with a wide range of sounds. I'm gonna show it to you here on the bass guitar initially. ("Love is Waiting" by Sophe Lux and the Mystics) And here we are soloed. Decapitator's off right now, and I'm gonna turn it on. (distorted solo bass guitar) It really brings it forward. We got a lot more sustain. Distortion and compression are inherently all related as well, but never forget that. And one thing I'll always do on a track like this is to cut a little bit of high end. You can hear if I open this back up where it would be naturally. (distorted solo bass guitar) The clicks and stuff could really destroy a mix. So we're gonna roll it back to comfortable low only, hear it in the mix, let's see how that goes. (distorted bass with full track) And you can adjust…
