Distortion pedals and bass DI

- [Instructor] As a bass player myself, I understand taking time to properly capture this instrument in the studio while recording. Using distortion pedals on electric bass guitar can bring out harmonics, and fill in the sound of a band, but it can also present some difficulties. When I first started tracking bands professionally, I found that bass players would generally and unknowingly plug their distortion pedal inline before the studio DI box and their amp, thus giving me the distorted signal coming down the DI line. I quickly learned to check when this wasn't sonically working, especially when the pedal was really harsh or brittle-sounding, because it didn't have the amplifier and speaker rolling off the high end. I would swap the cables around so I could get an undistorted DI signal, and a distorted amp signal to work with in the mix.
