- [Instructor] When it comes to writing songs, of course you can sit down and write whatever moves you. But sometimes, doing some research in advance of a writing session can be a huge help. What I mean by research is, find out which recording artists in the genre that you're comfortable writing in are in the process of making an album and are looking for songs, or, if you're writing for film and TV, find out which music supervisors are looking for songs for what kinds of films and TV shows. What I mean by doing the research is, there are ways, either by reading, for example, Variety Magazine, which lists music supervisors and which films or TV shows they're working on, or pitch listing services which list which artists are looking for songs on a variety of different labels, and again, according to genres.
