Drum overhead compression

- When mixing, I typically don't apply compression to drum overhead mics. I usually don't want to increase the amount of room ambience, and I like the high transient peaks of the cymbals to remain natural and open. So, for this listening experience, I though I'd try compressing the overhead mics, matching the levels really closely and taking note of what the audible changes are. I used a ratio of eight to one, with medium attack and fast release, pretty typical settings for percussion in my mixes. So, let's take a quick listen off and on. You can tell by the bypass button what I'm doing here. (drums playing) It's all really subtle, but what one of the things I really start to hear is that the room ambience increases a little bit. Take a listen for that. (drums playing) Just a little bit, just a little bit. Then it also started to appear to me that the snare attack was getting pulled back a little bit by the compressor. And that would make sense, as that is usually the loudest source…
