Eliminate distractions

- [Instructor] One of the simplest and best ways to really focus your songwriting is to eliminate distractions during your writing session. These days, we are pulled in so many different directions, and the single greatest culprit is our phone. So my recommendation, in all seriousness, unless you're also an EMT who is on call, is turn off your phone while you are writing. Also, stop checking your email. Don't worry about your texts or posting on social media. I understand how important it is to promote your writing as part of your marketing of yourself. I get all of that. That can happen after the writing session. My instinct is write first, and then go back to sort of integrating all of that into the larger marketing picture of social media. It is so tempting because writing can be uncomfortable. It is so tempting to keep stepping away from the writing process and checking your email or texting or working on your social media. Avoid that if at all possible. I think your writing will improve as a direct result of eliminating those distractions.
