- So how do you get that specific vocal sound that you're going for? Let's talk about some of the engineering concepts that are going to get you there. First of all, it's not just the gear. I'm going to say that again. It's not just about the gear. You can have a really bad recording with great gear, and you can have a really great recording with terrible gear. It's not about the gear. Let me give you an example of something, too. Let's say you have Fairchild Compressor, which costs about $25,0000-$30,000, but you're using it all wrong. You're going to end up getting a really messed up vocal. So, having that great gear is not going to, kind of, get you the great vocal, despite the fact that you're using a Fairchild. What can you think about aside from gear? Well, we've got mic placement. So, that is how far you are away from the diaphragm. That's going to influence how it sounds. Also, the presence of popper stopper or not, to avoid plosives. That's going to influence the sound. It…
