FET (field-effect transistor)

- [Instructor] FET compressors were essentially designed to emulate a tube sound, but with more reliability. Instead of using a tube as a detector for gain reduction, it uses a FET, or Field Effect Transistor component. They have very fast attack and release times, making them ideal for highly transient signals such as drums. They typically offer input, output, ratio, attack and release controls, which allow a wider range of for various sources. By design, they color the sound quite a bit, which is what draws many people to this style of compressor. Ideal applications would be drums, guitars, vocals. But certainly not limited, as they will sound great on most anything. Now I'll list some of the most recognizable FET compressors. The Universal Audio 1176 is another iconic compressor that's highly sought after.
