Finding the best tempo
- Picking the right tempo for a song is an incredibly crucial step. You pick a tempo that's too fast, and the song starts to lose impact. You pick one that's too slow, and it can drag. It's really important to get it right. Please do not rush this step. You pick a tempo, and for the most part, even though you can change things in your DAW, you're stuck with it in a way. But there is a big difference between working with MIDI and working with audio. If you're mostly working with MIDI, a lot of these tempo things don't pertain, because, at a click of a button, you can go higher or lower and there's no problem with that. But the minute you involve audio, whether it's with a vocal or with drums, then it puts you in a different position, 'cause you might be stretching or you might be condensing audio, and that gives artifacts and kind of changes the character of the sound.
