Fixing boomy upright bass

- [Narrator] Upright bass is a difficult instrument to mic well. Getting low-end response evenly between the notes and clear mid-range articulation is not especially easy. This example was recorded first with a pair of mics that I'd already had set up for a recording session. I had a ribbon mic on the bottom, pointing kind of down, and then I have the lighter colored mic at the top, a large diaphragm condenser mic, pointing kind of up. I have their heads next to each other, so that they're coincidental, they're going to pick up sound waves at the same time and stay in a nice phase relationship between each other. You can see another view of it here, pointing towards the middle of the bass, kind of towards the bottom of the finger board. And then I also have a mic down here. This is a typical kick drum mic, pointing at the F hole, and up above it was a small diaphragm condenser mic that, unfortunately, I don't have a photo of.
