- [Instructor] Some kick drums are too floppy-sounding for the song. Maybe because there was a front head, or maybe because of the tuning. Here's a way to tighten up the sound so it punches through the mix. First of all, let's listen to our track. ("Every Day Is A Gift" by Patricia Bahia) (drums beat unaccompanied) Now you can hear that what's happening there is a lot of leakage, first of all, especially from the snare drum. The kick sounds pretty floppy. Sometimes it works just fine in the track, and you won't notice it at all. Other times, you want it just a little bit tighter. So what we're going to do is add a gate. And we'll come over here, just our standard gate, and sometimes you'll find a better gate than what's native in the track, and use it, if it works better, but just to show you that just about anything can work, this is the standard native Pro Tools gate.
