Hat pad trigger trick

- [Instructor] Keyboard pads usually have a single mission in adding the glue behind the other mix elements. There are times when we'd like it to do something else during the mix, though, and here's a way to accomplish that. First of all, let's listen to this track. All it is is kick and claps, and some congas, and a hat, bass, and a pad. (electronic pop music) (pad track solo) You can hear the pad has a long filter sweep on it, and that's pretty good. But let's just say we want it to be a bit more rhythmic. What we'll do is we'll key it off the hi-hat. First of all, have a listen to what the hat is first. (hi-hat track plays) So what we're going to do first of all is on the pad, we will add a gate. I'll come over here and we'll add our run of the mill expander gate by Pro Tools. We're going to add a key input, so we'll make this bus number 11. The whole secret of course is to come over and make sure that we send something to that key input on bus 11, and we do that from the hi-hat…
