- [Instructor] In 1965, the composers of the San Francisco Tape Music Center asked Don Buchla to build an electronic musical instrument for live performances and recording. What resulted was a voltage-controlled synthesizer. It was called the Buchla Electric Music Box. Don Buchla disliked the word synthesizer, which, to him, suggested a synthetic imitation of real sounds. What made Don Buchla's design special was that he created an oscillator that could be played with voltages. Instead of a person turning a dial, the dial could now be turned by a voltage. And because voltages can change the dial much faster than composer, this was the start of a whole new era in music. It was also the start of what we now call the west coast style electronic music or west coast synthesis. Having an oscillator that responds to voltages is a first step. You also needed a second oscillator that can create a kind of slow voltage needed to control the main oscillator. This is an LFO. Buchla called it a…
