How do you compose a film score?

- In this chapter, we're going to look at the mechanics of how you actually compose a musical score. Now, you don't have to necessarily be a master of music theory to compose a score. I've written music my whole life, but I've never composed anything for orchestra, before. I'm more familiar with like, guitars and drums and stuff. But I tried this anyway and I'm happy with a lot of what I came up with. Typically, the first part of the film-scoring process is called a spotting session. This is where the composer and director sit down and talk about the score in detail, exactly where each cue should start and stop, what emotion should be conveyed, and so forth. By the way, a cue is what we call each separate piece or composition in the musical score, and you typically name them based on the reel and then the letter M, and then the number or the piece. So we only had one reel, it was a short film, so we called 1 M and then…
