Introduction to this course

- [Instructor] Hey, folks, welcome to the 12th course in this series on making a short film. Here we're going to be talking about audio. This is the thing that I probably learned the most about during this whole process, and the thing that I find that trips up most new filmmakers. Now regardless of your background with audio, if you want to make movies, you have to develop and refine your auditory taste, and that's what we're going to do in this course. We'll start out by looking at some core concepts in digital audio, then we'll be going back to production to look at how to record audio on set. We'll show you how to mic 3D models, which can also work for real people, too. We'll talk about different types of microphones and when you might want to use them. We'll look in more detail at our workflow and both of these processes, sound design and the musical score. We'll investigate how the art form of sound design has evolved over time, and against my better judgment, I'll show you my makeshift sound design for "The Assurance," and then we'll see how an actual audio pro made that a million times better. We'll look at how common audio effects can substantially improve your film, compression, reverb, EQ, and more. We'll look at how to create special effects, how to make sounds feel more distant, and how to create much cleaner audio in both Adobe Audition and the jaw-dropping iZotope RX. Then we'll switch gears and look at film music, including how it's used to tell stories. As part of that, we'll be looking at how themes are used and modified in Hollywood scores. And honestly, that's probably my favorite part of this whole course, you know, personally. We'll also get into the nitty-gritty of film scores, from the mechanics of scoring to picture to musical choices you might consider. And we'll also talk about orchestration, how I put this orchestra together, how to conduct an orchestra, the mistakes I made doing so, as well as some ways I was able to fix some of that stuff after the fact. And honestly, there's so much other cool stuff that we're going to look at, but I don't want to make this intro video any longer, and I'm pretty pumped by all this stuff, so let's just jump in and get to it.
