Keep a recorder running
- [Narrator] A trick that I've used over the years during my writing sessions is to keep some kind of a recorder running throughout the entire session. This could be the voice memo app on your smartphone, it could be a little standalone application on your laptop. Here's why keeping a recorder running is so useful. First of all it is a really, really simple way to capture moments in a songwriting session where you might be playing or singing and there's a little snippet of melody or lyric and then you keep going and about five minutes later you think what was that thing I did a little while back that was so interesting melodically? Well, sometimes in the course of writing a song, that stuff kind of comes and goes because it's more like a brainstorming session or stream of consciousness. So having that recorder running is a really, really great way to go back to that moment of inspiration which you might otherwise have forgotten and not been able to retrieve.
