- Let's say you're going to build a house. You need architectural plans. You need these plans so that you can figure out what you're going to build, when you're going to build it, how you're going to build it. Think of preproduction in the same way. It's your road map and it's your guide, it's your bible for getting back to the essence of the song's production. It's the main pillar of the song. One thing that's most crucial in getting a preproduction together is having a demo. What's a demo? A demo is simply a simple recording of the song that you're going to produce. Demos can come in all forms. You can have a demo that's from a recording on your phone, it can be a live performance that was just recorded by someone in the audience, or it could be something that you do in Pro Tools.
