- Let me guess. You didn't sign up to be a music producer in order to manage budget and timelines. I'm guessing it's more like you wanted to be a music producer so that you could make music. Well, this stuff is not the most fun, but it's completely necessary, so we might not think that the role of producer has much to do with budget and timelines, but if we take a historical perspective on this, it's always been the case that producers are in charge of the entire recording process, including timeline and budgets, and it's still your responsibility, so let's take a look at it now. One thing that I always go back to is a diagram of a triangle that on one corner says good, another says cheap, and the other says quick, and the idea is that you've got to pick two. You can't have anything and have it be good, cheap, and quick, so if it's good and quick, then it's not going to be cheap. If it's cheap and quick, it's probably not going to be good.
