Mic’ing electric guitar for pick sound

- [Instructor] I've done a lot of totally live recording sessions for bands. And one of the things I started to notice that was different than a typical studio session with overdubs, was that many times, the lead vocal mic would pic up the sounds of the electric guitar the singer was playing. They'd usually be in an isolation booth, strumming or picking. And I'd hear the little plank or chime of the guitar strings being hit. Sometimes this was annoying, but other times it was kind of cool. Nowadays when I'm tracking certain types of electric guitar overdubs, I'll see if we can mic up the body of the electric guitar. For this video, I grabbed a inexpensive small diaphragm mic and pointed it at my picking hand. I recorded the amp in the live room, and played along out of tune and sloppy, on headphones in the control room. Listen to the guitar from just the amp. (guitar music) Now add in the guitar mic.
