Mid/Side or XY drum mics?

- [Narrator] I've had a lot of people send me Mid-Side recorded drum overhead tracks to mix with lately. And almost every time that happens, I feel that I'm unhappy with the final results. The type of stereo miking that you use can bring out the kit in different ways, but you have to make sure that it stays coherent in mono and stereo, and does the most to bring out the best in the drums. Here we're listening to a kit we've tracked, XY, pair over the snare, and also a Mid-Side pair, up over the snare, over the kit, picking up all the cymbals. Alright, so let's give these a listen. (drums playing) That's the XY pair. Skip over to the Mid-Side. Let's go back to XY. Back to Mid-Side. Back to XY. You hear a very different focus. The XY seems a little less wide, I guess, than the Mid-Side, and it has a little bit different tonality with some of the cymbals and the high hat and the snare.
