- [Instructor] This might be one of those obvious bits of advice, but I always find myself amazed when I visit home studios, or even small commercial setups, and find that the engineer only has a single set of monitors available. Even when all I had was an eight track tape deck in my basement next to a washing machine, I had several sets of speakers to check mixes out on. Having extra monitors doesn't mean that one switches around to different speakers during a session all the time. No, in fact almost 95% of my time in the studio, I use the same set of larger near field monitors, but occasionally, during tracking or mixing, I will reference another set of speakers to make sure everything is holding up as I want it to. I set up a pair of mics in my control room and recorded from the listening position, but that's still nothing like being there.
