Overdrive it
- [Instructor] Overdrive, and I know we're starting to get to hearing the same sort of words applied to the same thing. To me, though, overdrive indicates the kind of harmonic distortion that occurs when you push a preamp, a mic preamp in particular, to its breaking point of signal level. And when I talk about harmonics, it's the series of overtones that occur, starting with the root note, or tone, and build up in a harmonic sequence that is related to that root note, but adds a richness and a tonality to it that is unmistakable. And we're going to kind of go from bottom to top in this example, and as we get towards the top, you'll notice the harmonics structure much more obviously than here at the bottom. So, I've chosen four instruments to demonstrate what I consider overdrive harmonic distortion applied to a signal, and we're going to start with the kick drum because it can be very effected, even on something so foundation oriented as a kick drum, let's play a little of the song…
