Panning vibraslap by hand

Panning vibraslap by hand

- [Instructor] I was producing an album and the drummer had the idea of adding a Vibraslap, a unique percussion instrument, to a key break in the song. When we tracked the Vibraslap part, I simply grabbed the pair of mikes we had used as a stereo overhead for the drums, lowered them down and told him to play the part in front of the xy pair of mikes but to move the Vibraslap from right to left as he played. Here's how it sounds. (Vibraslap rattles) (Vibraslap rattles) One more time, just so you can get the effect. Listen for the panning. (Vibraslap rattles) (Vibraslap rattles) How simple is that? Real stereo movement and it adds to the sometimes humorous sound effect cartoon-style of the Vibraslap. Keep this sort of stereo movement, or real handmade panning, in mind next time when you're tracking percussion on a song. It can add interest and make a part pop out in a unique way.
