- So, you've engineered a great vocal sound. That's awesome. But, now, how do you produce a great vocal performance? Performance is everything. You can have a great sound and a lousy performance; the overall effect can be negative. You can have a great performance and really crappy sound; the overall effect can be positive. Think of a recording by the classic blues singer, Robert Johnson. Not a great microphone or microphone technique, but everything comes across in that performance; it's all that matters. This whole area is not just about pressing record; it's entirely different skill set. If you don't get a compelling vocal performance, the song's not going to be great. No if, ands, or buts. It's also not going to be successful. What's it mean to be compelling? For me, compelling means that the end listener is hearing it and they're feeling something. Nothing more.
