Programming instruments and creating a sonic landscape
- So you've programmed a killer drum track. That's the foundation of your house. Now it's time to do the walls, the roof, and basically create a landscape using sounds and instruments. One thing that I always like to do here is to go back to the original sonic vision. What was in your head at the time? What did you want to create with this track? So here's how I think about that. There's three things that we spoke about with regard to drum programming. We've got sound, groove, and pattern. Those things can be applied to every single instrument. Doesn't matter if it's bass, guitar, keys, synth, horns, all of those things, every single thing is going to be playing a sound, it's going to be playing with a certain groove, and it's going to have a certain pattern. Here's an example: bass. Is the bass sound going to be a sub bass? Is it going to be a live bass, synth bass? Are you going to have no bass?
