Quick tip on recording snare drum

- [Instructor] I covered this one before, in my Music Production Secrets: Larry Crane on Recording course, but here it is condensed down. Simply put, this is my most important tip for recording drums, and one that I luckily figured out early on in my career. Many times, especially in live sound, you'll see a mic on the snare that's coming over the rim and looking towards the center of the drum, like it is in the photo here. To me, the sound it gets is unappealing and hard to work with in the mix. All right, let's take a listen to that. This is the mic in that same exact position, soloed. (drum music) Now let's hear it with the rest of the kit. The mic's brought in. (drum music) Not terrible, but let's try this. The recording trick that I discovered was to simply pull the mic back and angle it so it was pointing down at the rim of the snare. This technique picks up more of the bottom of the snare, with the wires, plus some of the shell, or the side of the drum as well. Let's hear that…
