Recording instrumental parts and overdubs

- Whether your track is programmed, or live instruments, or a combination of those things, overdubbing is a crucial step that can bring life to any production. So when do you want to do overdubs? I always think about overdubs when I've got something that's very programmed, and I need to bring some life to it. Here's some examples. Let's say you've got a programmed beat that feels good but is just a little bit lifeless. Try adding a live high hat there and see what that does. Same thing, let's say you've got a house track going, and it's four in the floor and everything is sequenced and you've got synths, and instead of a programmed bass line, bring in a live bass player, and it's going to change the energy of the whole thing. Make it a lot more human-feeling. Same thing by adding something like guitar to a very sequenced track, it can bring out rock elements, or funk elements, or things that you never pictured would be there.
