Recording one-person handclaps

- Many times I'll be working on an album, and by the time we're doing percussion, there's only one person left in the session. This kind of makes it hard when it's time for doing hand claps. Look for my video, "Mixing with Single Hand Claps", to find one way you can deal with this issue. But if you're in the tracking stages, here's what I'll do. First I'll place the clapper in a slightly live part of the studio, maybe even roll up the carpets if that helps. Then I'll record at least four passes of the claps, on the section where it's needed, sometimes moving the clapper closer or further from the mic for different takes. Then I'll pan them out, usually full left and right, and I'll add some fast compression to make the sound snap, and the room tone will become more apparent. (upbeat jazz) (hands clapping) Now do the compressor. (hands clapping) Then bring the volume down a little bit. (hands clapping)…
