Register the song with your performing rights organization (PRO)

- [Narrator] One of the first things you should consider doing once you've completed your song is registering your song with your PRO. By way of definition, a PRO stands for a Performing Rights Organization. This is either BMI, ASCAP or SESAC. Strictly speaking a performing rights organization is there to chart your performance royalties and then pay you once your song is performed whether that's on a streaming service or on the radio or film and TV. But, first of all, registering your song with your PRO is free, so there's really no reason not to do it. Second of all, especially if you have collaborated, it's a great way to officially establish the splits, in other words the song writing percentages, for each collaborator on the song. And finally, it is just a simple way of making sure that your song officially exists.
