Separate rhythm and solo guitar for mixing

- [Instructor] Many times, I'll be mixing from a session where the guitarist is playing rhythm at some points in a song, but then switching to lead at other spots. I like this approach when tracking, as this is likely the way the band plays live, and we can keep that similar energy flowing, but when I'm mixing, I frequently find I need more control over the levels and effects between these parts. Here's a track where we have a rhythm guitar part that switches to a simple lead in the middle and then back to rhythm. You can visibly see that the lead is louder than the other parts of the take. (rock music) And it comes back out here. (rock music) So the first step is to create a new track to place the solo in. That's quite simple. Label it. All right, and then we'll simply cut the solo out of the track, I'm just going to do it roughly. And drop it into the new track. Now I'm going to zoom in a little, and massage these edits.
