Short delays on snare drums

- [Larry] In my mind, there's no cooler musical and recording sound than the almighty flam. A flam is simply when two or more hits or instruments don't land on the same beat at the exact same time. In this age of digitally tuned vocals and edited drum tracks, it might seem contrary to suggest that sounds hitting imperfectly are good, but the truth is that flams get their listeners excited. Think of the stomp, stomp, clap, of Queen's "We Will Rock You." The multiple stomps and claps would not have much impact if some overeager engineer had been able to edit the overdubs all onto the same exact beat. For this tip I simply apply an echo to the snare drum track in a mix. This could also be done with an aux in or a bus, but I find it easier to work this way. I'll start with a delay of 50% mix against the original snare sound, but I'll probably go to even less of the delay in the mix in the end. I started a zero-millisecond delay, which is no delay, and then slowly moved the delay time knob…
