Special processing: Multiband compression

- [Instructor] In this special techniques video I want to show you about multi-band limiting in very descriptive terms. So, again, one of the biggest complaints I get about compression is I'm using too much of it. And one of the ways to avoid that is with a high-pass filter applied to the detection circuitry. This LA-2A is a newer design that helps to show us how that works very well. This emphasis control puts a high-pass filter at the input stage of the limiter so that you can allow low frequency material to skate through undetected by the gain-reduction circuitry and only compress the upper end of the spectrum. So when it's fully rotated to the clockwise side, full bandwidth is applied to the gain-reduction detection circuitry, so watch what happens. Look what's happening to the bass at full range. (bassline) Now that could result in some pumping for the bass 'cause it's compressing between five and seven dB. And that could be too much. But you want to really pronounce the bass…
