Stereo vs. mono drum overhead mics

- [Narrator] I've always used a stereo XY pair of small diaphragm cardioid mics as my drum overheads. A few times I've set up a single mic as on overhead and it would sound pretty decent as well. But I wanted to know what the difference would be if I alternated between stereo and mono with the exact same mics, drummer, and close mics. So first we're gonna listen to the overhead soloed. We have a stereo pair and we have the mono mic. (drum beats) And then we hear in mono. (drum beats) Just listening to the same sections to hear the differences. Stereo, (drum beats) and mono. (drum beats) You know, mostly you're using that width. Let's go to the section here with the toms. Stereo, (drum beats) and then mono. (drum beats) Just a little different, little different ambiance. (drum beats) Mono. (drum beats) Now, what happens if we center the stereo images of the stereo pair? Center these instead of having them panned and we play them against the mono.
