Taming hi-hat bleed

(drumming) - [Instructor] It's basically impossible to isolate parts of the drum kit in the recording process. Especially in many modern recordings, the definition of the snare and the fullness of that drum comes in to play. But since most kits are set up with a hi-hat near the snare, it's difficult to compress or boost high-end on that snare track, without bringing up the hi-hat frequencies as well. Here we examine different ways to record snare in relation to hi-hat. And to illustrate this, I've recorded the snare drum in the kit in five different ways. So first of all, we recorded the mic close on the snare. You can see close placement to the edge, the way I like to record it. Hi-hat's looming over it a little bit there. Another view of that right in on the snare, trying to reject the hi-hat as much as possible. Now we moved it back from the snare.
