Taming the picked bass

- [Narrator] Bass players that use a pick tend to play very hard. And this can mean peaks that are sometimes out of control. Here's how to tame them and get that bass to fit into the mix. First of all, let's listen to the track. These are raw tracks. There's no compression, there's no equalizers, there is nothing on it. So this will sound pretty raw. But one of the things you should look for is the bass and how much it's peaking, and how much some of the notes just jump out of the track. Have a listen. ("Pull My Stinger" by SNEW) Now you can see already, right here, there are peaks all over the place. This was an active bass and the bass player was playing with a pick. So you can see there are some notes that are really, really out of control here. What we're going to do first of all is add a limiter. A limiter's really important in here. And a limiter is a compressor that has the ratio that goes beyond 10 to one. We're going to take it out to maybe 20 to one. I want you to watch…
