Tube mic preamps

- [Narrator] The first type of microphone preamplifiers that I'll discuss are based around vacuum tubes. A vacuum tube is literally a glass tube that consists of various elements. There's many types of tubes and they each have a particular purpose. In a microphone preamp, the purpose of the tube is to amplify the low signal coming from the output of a microphone. Vacuum tubes offer many benefits such as smooth musical clipping, a wider dynamic range, and more tolerance for overloads. They typically operate with far less crossover distortion. The disadvantages to these type of designs are they run on higher operating voltages, which consume more power and are less efficient. The glass vacuum tubes are highly fragile and bulky making portability far more difficult. Although the tubes are easy to replace, they generate a lot of heat and are expensive.
