Types of monitor speakers

- [Instructor] A speaker is essentially the opposite of a microphone. It takes an electrical signal and converts it using a diaphragm and moving coil back to an audio sound wave. Its design utilizes the diaphragm which consists of a cone, magnet, and voice coil. Monitor speakers are the type of speakers used in professional studios and they are designed to accurately translate the audio material that is being played back. They are divided by two main types, active and passive. Active means that the speaker has a built-in power amp and passive means that the speaker requires an external power amp for operation. There are also many different configurations for a speaker such as two-way, three-way, and so forth. This terminology describes the way in which the frequencies are divided and sent to each speaker in the cabinet. The tweeter will get all the high frequencies and the mid and lows will be distributed to the woofer speakers. They are also divided into three size categories…
