Understanding the artistic vision

- You've chosen a song, and now it's time to think about the larger vision for this artist. I like to think of it as if it's a bird's eye view of the artist and his or her material. First of all, who is this artist? What do they stand for, what do they sound like, what do they look like? These are all things that you want to incorporate into your vision. I've found that great artists are absolutely indistinguishable from their material. When you think of Ray Charles, for example, singing What I Say, who else can sing that song with such conviction? When you think of Adele singing Rolling in the Deep, when you think of The Beatles singing anything that they sing, no one else can touch it. This is their signature material. You want to create this type of situation with your artist. What's helpful in doing that is to think of this top down. When you have a top-down hierarchy, you say, what's at the top?
